Charlie and Annie’s Daily Poll: Should companies like Walmart be more socially responsible or are they only obligated to push items that people want to buy since they have to turn a profit?
A bit of a controversy has erupted over displays which Walmart has set up for Black History Month. Most people realize that February is Black History Month and the world’s largest retailer decided to set up displays of DVD’s featuring prominent black artists and related subject matter. Included in the displays are titles such as:
• Thug Angel – Tupac Shakur
• The Players Club
• Chappelle’s Show – Season 2 Uncensored
But one title that didn’t make the displays is “For Love of Liberty: The Story of America’s Black Patriots”. It is a documentary about the history of blacks in the military. The fact that the title was not included by Walmart has angered some African American vets.
One Viet Nam vet commented that it was irresponsible to not include that title but to include the “gangster rap things”. He went on to further ask, “At a time when we need to influence young people with positive things, why would they not carry this amazing story?”
A Walmart spokeswoman responded that the retailer decides what titles make the promotion based on price, release date and popularity.
Annie: I agree with that vet; Walmart should be promoting items that have a positive impact on society!
Charlie: Walmart is in business to make a profit so they promote things that will sell.
Annie: They make lots of money and they can sacrifice a little bit for the common good!
Charlie: What’s a little bit? They don’t make a profit and they go out of business! Blame our society and its low standards; they only give the people what they want!
Annie: Oh, who needs Walmart anyway!
Charlie: Where do you think Mama and Papa get all those cat toys for us? If it wasn’t for Walmart’s low prices, they wouldn’t be able to buy so many of them to keep us entertained.
Annie: Oh, I see. Maybe Walmart DOES need to be concerned about its profits!
Charlie: Looks like “social responsibility” maybe isn’t so important when it might negatively affect you!
Annie: Isn’t it past your naptime?!?!
