Embarrassing Proposal

Charlie and Annie’s Daily Poll: Do you think a fake marriage proposal with a negative outcome is a funny entertainment bit or is it stepping over the line?

It has become almost cliché at professional sporting events: During a break in the action, a young couple among the spectators is shown on the Jumbotron. It seems to just be a random crowd shot until text appears on the screen that says something like, “I love you so-and-so! Will you marry me?”
The young woman is shocked and awed, she says “yes” and there is a lot of kissing and hugging.

This now commonplace scene seemed to be playing out again on Sunday in Madison Square Garden in New York. The Rangers hockey team was playing the Tampa Bay Lightning. This time there was an unfortunate twist; she turned him down!

The crowd was buzzing after watching this poor guy get humiliated in front of thousands of people.

But unbeknownst to the mass of spectators, there was another twist. As it turns out, the proposal/turndown was a Valentine’s Day prank set up by the team.

The subject “couple” were paid actors who are actually engaged in real life!

Annie: I think that prank was terrible! Love is sacred and shouldn’t be made fun of for the sake of a silly prank.

Charlie: You certainly are an idealist! It was just a joke; part of the entertainment at a sports event!

Annie: Certain things should be out of bounds and a marriage proposal on Valentine’s Day is one of those things!

Charlie: Nobody got hurt. They were just actors! People love to watch a train wreck; the crowd got a big kick out of it.

Annie: I’m sure the females in the crowd didn’t appreciate it!

Charlie: It was a hockey game. The crowd was mostly fat, 40-year-old, bald guys! They loved watching some young guy get shot down!

Annie: You’re right. I guess you can’t blame the team when they have to cater to an arena full of Neanderthals!

Charlie: Exactly. Save all that “high brow” stuff for the Ice Capades. We guys want to see pain and humiliation!
