Charlie and Annie’s Daily Poll: Do you think there is too much partisanship in Congress or do you want to maintain the status quo?
Indiana Senator Evan Bayh stunned the political world yesterday by announcing he will retire at the end of his current term. He is a two-term Senator and it was thought that he would easily win a third term. Bayh stated that he no longer wished to serve in a body that is so divided by bitter partisanship.
This morning on MSNBC Bayh further dissed the American political system, calling it dysfunctional. He pointed to the nature of modern politics as the root of the problem saying that legislators are in permanent campaign mode. Bayh further elaborated that this constant campaigning leaves little or no time for doing the people’s business.
Bayh went on to say that the American people need to deliver a shock to Congress by voting out all the incumbents and replacing them with people who will govern for the good of the people, instead of special-interest groups.
Charlie: Bayh’s right about one thing; we need to throw out all the bums!
Annie: That’s a little extreme, isn’t it? There are some people in Congress who are there to serve the “greater good”.
Charlie: Oh, yeah? Name one!
Annie: Ummm…Well…
Charlie: Just as I thought!
Annie: Something has to be done about this partisan gridlock!
Charlie: Not necessarily. As Thomas Paine said, “That government is best which governs least”. Those idiots can’t do anything TO us when they’re gridlocked!
Annie: We need to get people in there who will do things FOR us!
Charlie: Good luck! I wouldn’t hold my breath if I was you!
Annie: Oh, I won’t. I’m optimistic, not delusional!
