The Commander-In-Grief?

Charlie and Annie’s Daily Poll: Do you think the office of President of the U.S. still commands the level of respect that it used to or has it been diminished by the actions of recent Commanders-In-Chief? (Please leave your response in the “comments” section.)

Today is President’s Day, which is the holiday set aside to pay homage to the men who have served as Commander-In-Chief. The office once commanded respect like no other, but its image has been marred by the unsavory behavior of some recent presidents.

The behind-the-scenes shenanigans have stood in stark contrast to the image presented to the public. In the early 1960’s, the public perception of the Kennedy administration was of “Camelot” while the reality was comprised of infidelity and torrid affairs. More recently, Bill Clinton spent much of his time in the Oval Office chasing interns. He was even impeached for lying about his actions under oath.

Charlie: Our presidents sure aren’t what they used to be. The office was once held by men of honor and integrity!

Annie: Nobody’s perfect and even those past presidents had their flaws!

Charlie: That’s true, but they generally avoided doing things that would embarrass the entire nation!

Annie: I don’t know. They probably had their share of “incidents” that have been forgotten by history.

Charlie: Well, Monica’s stained blue dress will probably wind up in the Smithsonian eventually; I don’t believe there is any similar type of artifact from George Washington’s presidency in there!

Annie: You have a valid point. I guess now all we can really ask of a president is that he or she doesn’t destroy the economy or start a nuclear war!

Charlie: Talk about lowered expectations! People used to look up to the president for leadership. Now, we just have to hope we’re not looking TOO FAR DOWN on the presidents by the time they leave office!

Annie: Amen, brother!
