Well, Americans are fat, but we may not be getting fatter.
On Wednesday, the Journal of the American Medical Association reported that Americans are at the fattest they’ve ever been. That’s the bad news. The good news is that the prevalence of obesity in the country does not appear to be increasing.
Two thirds of Americans are considered overweight with half of those individuals falling in the obese range.
Experts suggest that it’s not the end of the world if you carry a couple of extra pounds. It’s where you carry the weight that matters. Extra weight around the waistline is of greatest concern. Fat carried in that area can collect around internal organs and releases inflammatory chemicals, which are linked to cancer, diabetes and heart disease.
To minimize abdominal fat, experts suggest the following:
-Don’t Overdo It When You Workout: That can greatly increase your appetite and lead to overeating.
-Do Some Moderate Activity At Least Twice Per Week: Physical activity is crucial to maintaining weight loss.
-Eat a Snack Before and After a Workout: This will give you energy and prevent blood sugar levels from plummeting, which can lead to overeating.
-Eat 6 Small Meals Per Day: This helps keep hunger under control and prevents binge eating.
-Get Adequate Sleep: Between 6 and 8 hours is right for most people. Too much or too little sleep can lead to excess production of cortisol, a hormone that promotes the storage of belly fat.
-Find Ways to Relieve Stress: Meditation or a good yoga class can lower your stress level, which results in lower cortisol levels.
Annie: Reports like this make me glad mama and I work out and do yoga together.
Charlie: And I get my workout by tearing all around the house like a madman several times per day!
Annie: Yeah, but you increase MY cortisol levels because you usually end up involving me in your craziness whether I’m willing or not!
