Temple of the Cat Goddess

Answer to the previous Kitty Quiz: The Scottish Fold

Current Kitty Quiz: What breed of cat is commonly nicknamed “poodle cat” due to its wavy coat and habit of wagging its tail?

Please check the next post for the answer to the current Kitty Quiz!

Archaeologists have discovered a 2,000-year-old temple in Alexandria, Egypt. They believe the temple may have been dedicated to Bastet, an ancient Egyptian cat goddess.

The temple is thought to have belonged to the wife of King Ptolemy III. Her name was Queen Berenice. The king and Queen ruled Egypt in the 3rd century B.C.

The discovery seems to indicate that the ancient Egyptian cat-goddess was worshipped even in the later Ptolemaic period, which was heavily Greek-influenced.

Charlie: See, I always said I liked those ancient Egyptians and this is even more evidence that they were terrific people!

Annie: It’s hard to find fault in people who saw cats as goddesses!

Charlie: It’s no wonder the ancient Egyptians had such a powerful and long-lived civilization! I’d like to think it had something to do with their recognition of the proper position for cats near the top of the societal hierarchy!

Annie: Indeed! I think modern society could learn a lot from them in that regard.

Charlie: Well, we DO have it pretty good even as things stand now, but it could always be even better!

Annie: I can just see it now, the “Temple of Annie”!

Charlie: Oh, no! I knew this was going to happen; this news story has created a monster!
