Be alert; you never know where you might come across a masterpiece!
Shortly after becoming president of Catholic University, Rev. David M. O’Connell was searching for something in his bathroom. He opened the bathroom cabinet and something on the bottom shelf attracted his attention. Under a pile of other items was an old frame.
The frame contained an etching of an old man and was composed of countless fine lines.
The signature on the etching was “Rembrandt”.
Rev. O’Connell would show the etching to visitors for years, but never pursued the authentication of the piece. Then, about a year ago he showed it to the university’s archivist, Leslie Knoblauch. She sent photos of the etching to an appraiser who verified that the etching is an authentic Rembrandt.
A formal appraisal still needs to be done, but the etching could be worth as much as $100,000.00!
Charlie: Wow! I should go searching around the house looking for treasure; we could be rich and not even know it!
Annie: Hold on, partner! The odds are astronomical against a find like that. Besides, $100,000.00 would be nice, but it won’t exactly mean you’re set for life!
Charlie: I know, but think of all the gourmet cat food that would buy!
Annie: For sure! Rembrandt’s work is nice, but I personally prefer Monet.
Charlie: Why’s that?
Annie: Monet did lots of sketches and paintings involving cats!
Charlie: Got ya, sister!
