The next time you pick up a can of tuna at the grocery store and suffer sticker shock at the price, think about this: Earlier today someone paid $177,000 for a giant bluefin tuna at auction in Japan! Actually, the tuna was purchased by a group consisting of two Japanese sushi restaurants and one from Hong Kong.

The fish is absolutely gigantic, weighing 513 pounds! It was caught off the coast of northern Japan.

The auction price works out to be $345.03 per pound. So maybe the price of that can of tuna you buy at the store isn’t so outrageous after all.

This gigantic tuna did not even set the record at auction. In 2001 a 440-pound tuna went for $220,000. Yikes!

Annie: Wow, what a fish!

Charlie: I can almost taste it now!

Annie: Unfortunately, they’re going to waste it by serving it in sushi restaurants.

Charlie: I hear you! It SHOULD be going into cans of our favorite gourmet cat food!

Annie: Someone obviously doesn’t have their priorities straight!

Charlie: Sushi? Please, give me a break!
