Cat Fact: The Egyptian Mau is believed to be an ancient cat breed. Depictions that resemble it can be seen on ancient Egyptian scrolls and wall paintings.
Today, archaeologists lifted a 9-ton temple pylon out of the harbor in Alexandria, Egypt. The pylon is believed to be a part of the palace complex of Cleopatra. It once stood at the entrance to a temple of Isis, a goddess of fertility and magic and was quarried 700 miles away in Aswan. The palace complex was destroyed and submerged in an earthquake in the 4th century A.D.
It is hoped that the pylon will become part of a museum of archaeology in Alexandria that will lure tourists to the area. The museum is still in the planning stages, but planners envision having underwater tunnels so that visitors can see many artifacts where they lay in their submerged positions. Funding is still being sought for the museum.
Annie: It must have been a very exciting time to be a resident of Alexandria during Cleopatra’s time!
Charlie: You bet! Cats were revered and given extra-special treatment!
Annie: Imagine all that history.
Charlie: I can imagine getting the “Royal Treatment”!
Annie: Do you always have to think only about yourself? Do you ever see the bigger picture?
Charlie: I’m not thinking only about myself; ALL cats were pampered by the ancient Egyptians!
Annie: I guess you DO have a point.
Charlie: I do, Princess Annie.
Annie: That DOES have a nice ring to it!
