My grandfather used to say that, “Some people have more money than brains!” I used to think that was a very cynical viewpoint, but, anymore, I have to wonder. I am all for people spending their money any way they see fit, but when you see reports of people paying over $500,000 for a dog it kind of takes your breath away. Apparently, newly-wealthy people in China are paying these prices for a breed of dog that has become a status symbol: The Tibetan Mastiff. Talk about conspicuous consumption; these dogs can weigh up to 180 pounds!
Annie: Why would anybody want one of THOSE? They are U-G-L-Y!
Charlie: You couldn’t give me one; much less get me to pay hundreds of thousands of dollars!
Annie: I hear you brother!
Charlie: And imagine the upkeep! They must eat as much as a small horse!
Annie: Some Chinese celebrity must have gotten one and made it “cool” and now everybody wants one.
Charlie: People are funny! Now, if it was a fantastic cat breed, say the Ragdoll….
Annie: Oh, certainly the sky would be the limit!
