The B17B Menace

Cat Fact: While most cats do not like water, some cats take to it quite well. For instance, Tigers are fantastic swimmers and will sometimes swim long distances through the Mangrove swamps where they reside in India!

B17B may sound like a harmless combination of letters and numbers, but the monster iceberg that carries this designation is extremely dangerous. The iceberg is twice the size of Manhattan and is floating north from Antarctica toward Australia. The Australian government has issued warnings about the iceberg to all ships in the area; the threat that such a monster berg presents to shipping is obvious.

The good news is that the berg is melting as it moves into warmer waters and should dissolve completely in a few weeks. The bad news is as it melts and gets thinner, it is breaking up into smaller pieces. These pieces may spread out and present an even greater short term threat to ships.

Annie: This is really scary stuff.

Charlie: Why? You’re not planning on taking a boat trip anytime soon!

Annie: Those ships have people on them. Didn’t you see the movie “Titanic”?

Charlie: Yes, but the technology they have NOW to avoid icebergs is much better than it was when the Titanic sank.

Annie: That’s true, but all it takes is one technical failure or human error and we’ll have another disaster on our hands!

Charlie: That’s why we kitties keep our feet right here on dry land; let those silly humans go out on the ocean in boats!

Annie: A shipping disaster could affect us though.

Charlie: How’s that?

Annie: Well, a cargo ship carrying our favorite gourmet cat food could strike that iceberg and…..

Charlie: Please stop! Now you ARE making me nervous!
