Cats and Caffeine

Cat Fact: The "normal" pulse rate range for cats is between 110 and 130 beats per minute. Caffeine would obviously raise that rate, but you should never give your cat any substance that contains caffeine unless directed to do so by your vet.
Reuters Health released a story today that opened as follows:

Sorry coffee lovers -- downing a few cups of coffee throughout the day may spark alertness, but it's unlikely to protect the aging brain from mental decline or dementia, according to researchers from Finland.

Some studies have suggested that coffee has a protective effect on brain function in old age, while others have not shown this association.

Charlie, Annie and I were dismayed by this. Although I don’t drink coffee, I do down a few Diet Pepsi’s every day to get my daily requirement of caffeine. And with the amount of Starbucks coffee my wife drinks, she probably accounts for a sizeable portion of their profits! Due to many of the aforementioned studies that show a protective effect of coffee on the Brain, we thought we were doing some good for our long term cognitive outlook!

Annie: That’s kind of a bummer! Soon, they may have even more difficulty determining EXACTLY WHAT WE WANT, WHEN WE WANT IT!

Charlie: They’re still fairly sharp for aging humans; I think we will be OK for a few more years.

Annie: I certainly hope you are right!

Charlie: There is a real upside to this.

Annie: What IS that?

Charlie: The caffeine keeps them wired up so they can play with us for longer stretches, but now they have to quit before WE are finished because they have other responsibilities; when they lose their faculties, they will forget they have other things to do and they will keep playing to OUR hearts’ content.

Annie: Drink up, papa!
